The world is getting smaller every day and your ability for success even greater.

The other day, a close friend and colleague of mine said she attended a killer workshop on social media.

She said the presenter gave her a boatload of new ideas and energy for her to expand her current business campaign using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. From her energy, I got the feeling the presenter not only hit a home run, but he also brought in the other three players (he really knows his stuff)!

So what did I do after we spoke? I immediately went to LinkedIn and tried to link with the presenter. Guess what happens?

I get this response: “Rich, Great to connect. So you know, based on a session you once did at the local library, you inspired me to start a company, build a website, promote myself on social media which resulted, among new business, in being asked to join an MBA program. I would enjoy the chance to let you know what you did if you would like to know. But thank you very much for all you did.”

We then had a roundtable tweet-fest on Twitter to let everyone know what happened!

What did this teach me?

You never know who’s listening when you present.

You never know how your words can impact another person.

The world is getting smaller every day.

I need to get out even more and present.

Always reach out to people whenever you hear their name.

Who will YOU meet this week?

The secret prescription to success is no longer a secret.

It’s simple. This prescription is easy to understand and execute — but for some reason, for most people, it’s really difficult and complex.

So here it is: Launch. Declare Victory. Move On.

Work is made up of a bunch of tasks, activities, projects, initiatives, and deliverables. We work and manage them day in and day out. Unfortunately, we sometimes forget that many of these things we do have a critical half-life. We need to complete them and get them out the door ASAP.

But we don’t do that. We keep working on them, we can make them better. We can push them to do a little bit more. In addition, we are sometimes afraid of releasing our deliverables out into the world for fear of failure. So we procrastinate.

So here’s my prescription for success (taught to me years ago by a valued boss):

Launch.

Get it out. Set a deadline and stick to it. Put plans in place to make sure nothing can stand in the way of launching, releasing, or completing your deliverable. It could be as big as a new product or as small as a simple presentation. Your job is to get it out and DONE.

Declare Victory.

This one is critical. Build into your plan the ability to put a positive spin on everything you accomplish. Why? Because the typical human being tends to do the exact opposite — they criticize, condemn, and complain about what they deliver. How it’s not ready, how you could’ve done better, how you missed the delivery date by a few seconds.

We all do it. So to be successful, do the exact opposite. Declare victory — let everyone know it’s out, it’s a success, build up enthusiasm, get people excited. Let them know about all the great things it will do and how it will change their lives.

Move On.

This is the most important part — once you declare victory, move on to something else. Don’t rest on your laurels — your last deliverable will start to smell after awhile. So many people launch something or complete a huge project and for the next 3-6 months, bask in the glory and slowly move from delivery to on-going maintenance.

Once you declare victory, move on to something new ASAP. Too many people fall into the trap of sticking around too long at the party and they suddenly become the ‘guest that wouldn’t leave’. So move on as soon as you can (if you have a hard time doing this, elect someone to push you out the door, hand you your car keys, and drive home).

Why is this a prescription for success? Because it clearly positions you to deliver quickly, market your success, and move on to another great project. Too many times we let nostalgia, inertia, and pure laziness to keep us back when we need to move forward.

This is my daily ‘mantra’. It’s comprised of many quotes taken from famous people and around the web (it’s not original, but it’s powerful).

Wake up in the morning and say this to yourself:

Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I will accomplish what others can’t.

Successful people get ahead during the time that other people waste.

I don’t waste time, for time is what life is comprised of.

To live is the rarest thing in the world, and I’m gonna live fully until I die.

At Noon, say this to yourself when things get hard and you get discouraged:

Don’t quit.

Put up with adversity now to set the stage of my future life as a champion.

I have to increase my will, my fortitude, my enthusiasm, and my energy to move forward.

Welcome the fight, for the struggle itself will not only teach me new things, it will push me to do better.

Right before you go to bed, say this to yourself to fuel your body and mind for the day ahead:

I moved my life, my career and my relationships forward today.

I did this, and this, and this, and this . . .

I am one step closer to my goals (even though we sometimes have to do the ’2 steps forward, 1 step back’ dance).

I have a roof over my head, I am not hungry, I am healthy. And I have myself and the wonderful people around me to thank for this.

Feel free to use my ‘mantra’ or come up with your own for 2012. Trust me — you will MOVE MOUNTAINS.

Think about their personality and demeanor. You’ll probably find they are frequently positive in their outlook on life and work.

You might come to the conclusion:
Because they are successful, they are naturally positive.

Actually, it’s the exact opposite.
Thinking and communicating positively actually delivers success.

Successful people regularly create positive and optimistic scenarios in their lives. It allows them to take those small, successful moments and turn them into opportunities to reach their goals.

Use big positive and cheerful words to express yourself.
When someone asks you about your business, say it’s ‘UNBELIEVABLE!’

Use bright and cheerful words to describe other people.
Say “I know John — he’s a great guy who always delivers.”

Use positive language to encourage others.
“I know you can do it because you’ve hit it out of the park every other time!”

Use positive words and images about the things you do.
“We had such an incredible time delivering that product. Even though it was close to the deadline, the entire team pulled together to make it happen!”

If you ‘litter’ your life with positive comments and thoughts, it opens up a world of opportunity to focus clearly on how you think about things. And it affect how you do them.

Do you disagree? Then do this for the next week:

Use small and condescending words to express yourself.

Use unflattering and hateful words to describe other people.

Use hostile language to discourage others.

Use negative words and images about the things you do.

Okay — I went a bit overboard. Just do this then:

Try not to use any flattering words to express yourself. Be humble.

Describe other people with uninspiring comments.

Encourage others by asking them to do things because they have to.

Never comment or mention the things you do.

See how far you get.

POST YOUR QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS BELOW

P.S. Having a hard time thinking positively about your life and work? Let’s talk. I’ve worked with many clients who have the same problem — and we developed a successful strategy to turn that around. If you’re not a client . . . pick up the phone and call me (203.500.2421) — I offer one (and only one) complimentary session each week.

Ever have a REALLY bad day? Here's how to get up and get GOING.

Ever have a REALLY bad day?

One that really SUCKS? Maybe you lose a bunch of clients in one fell swoop? Or you get dressed down by your boss for doing something stupid (and you thought it was brilliant)?

We all have those days. As Rocky Balboa said, “But it ain’t about how hard you get hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.”

Unfortunately, when you do get hit, you might find yourself wallowing in self pity.

You might even be in one of Kübler-Ross’ 5 Stages of Grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance).

Here’s how I deal with it — I call it the Rich Gee 3 Stages of Success:

Stage One – Frustration

Not angry, just frustrated. Something (or someone) kicks you HARD out of control and you find yourself wheeling emotionally.

You question your worth. You start backtracking all of your actions. Add in a healthy scoop of emotions and your are downright FRUSTRATED!

Stage Two – Reality Check

Stop the emotions for a second and let’s do a quick reality check. Let’s look at your situation logically — what REALLY happened? Is it the end of the world? Can you quickly recover?

Let’s level-set our thinking and try to understand what happened and what we can do.

Stage Three – Competitive Spirit

Now that you’ve thought logically about your situation and have come up with alternative strategies to move forward, let’s access your competitive spirit.

You might say, “ARE YOU KIDDING RICH? I just got over being frustrated!” Let me be clear — you need to access your competitive spirit to move forward, take action, and never let this happen to you again.

This is a natural process how humans adapt and EVOLVE. You hit a wall (or a wall hits you), you get frustrated, you do a reality check, and then get up and start running again.

As Rocky says, ” Keep Moving Forward”.

What do you do when life hits you square in the face?

POST YOUR QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS BELOW

P.S. Is life hitting you often? Let’s talk. I’ve worked with many clients who’ve been hit hard — and we developed a successful strategy to grow. If you’re not a client . . . pick up the phone and call me (203.500.2421) — I offer one (and only one) complimentary session each week. Check me out — it might make 2012 a rousing success.

They bring me business and success everyday. That’s why they are ALWAYS in my left pocket.

But most people either don’t have them (shame on you) or if they do — have terrible ones. Here are some mistakes people make with business cards:

1. You forget them.

This is the biggest mistake — your card is your brochure, your image, your information in a prospective client’s hands — and you now blew it because you forgot your cards. In addition, you now feel uncomfortable because you might or might not get theirs, which is gold in any business or position. Always carry them with you . . . Everywhere. Keep them in your car, your desk, your briefcase.

2. They look awful.

When I hand out my card, I usually get the exclamation, “What a great card!” or “Who did this for you, it’s incredible!”. Does this happen to you? If not, you need to have your cards made by professionals. If you aren’t creative, you need to hire a creative ASAP to design a logo and card for you. And then you need a qualified printer that will print a ‘knock-it-out-of-the-park’ card. Try 4by6.com or moo.com.

3. They don’t have the RIGHT information.

The most important item is your image — the look of your card. What image are you trying to present to your clients? I am an executive and business coach — no flowers or crazy colors on my card (see mine below). Information is also critical — not too much or too little — here’s my advice:
a. Name of company (logo)
b. Name (first & last, no middle name or initial)
c. Title
d. Phone Number (make it a direct line and say Direct)
e. Email
f. Address
g. Web Site

4. You don’t hand or receive them the right way.

So many people use business cards as an afterthought. I immediately ask for them within the first few minutes of meeting someone (or I offer my card). Why? It immediately gives me an opportunity to give them a compliment, it allows me to learn more about them, and it reinforces their name in my head so I can remember it. I usually receive the card and hold it with both hands and make a point of pausing for a few seconds and taking the time to really read the card. It can tell you a lot about that person and give you speaking trajectories to ask more questions — “I see you have an office in Hong Kong, do you travel there often?” “I see that your company is a subsidiary of Pixar, what is it like to work with them?” Most people just take the card and shove it into their pocket. Did you know it’s an insult in some countries to shove the card in your pocket and not take the time to read it?

5. You do nothing with them once they hit your pocket.

The biggest mistake! You need to reach out to that person either later that day or the next day and thank them via email (or phone) about your meeting. Just a quick note reinforcing the tenets of your meeting will go so far in your career because most people don’t do this. They take the card and forget about you. In addition, you need to immediately get that person’s information in your contact system. So you can put them on your eBlast list or just in your phone/address list in case they call back – you then have their name appearing on your cell phone.

What mistakes do you make with business cards? What new ideas or techniques do you use to get your business card noticed?

Work breeds frustration. It’s a fact.

You get frustrated when people or things knock you off balance, where you’re out of control. It could be a late project, or a recalcitrant associate, or a vendor who never gets back to you.

Let’s be honest — if everything worked perfectly, all the time, you would be quite bored at your job.

Did you know airplanes are off-course 95% of the time? The pilot or auto-pilot course-corrects to keep it headed in the right direction — it doesn’t check once in awhile – it’s an ongoing process.

Work needs course-corrections frequently. And the number and severity of the course-corrections are directly related to how much frustration you feel.

Now if everything starts to fail and you lose complete control, one of two things happen:

You get angry. You direct your frustration in an emotional manner towards the supposed perpetrator of the issue. You yell, you get mad, and you probably say things that are not found in the professional handbook.

You shut down. You lose energy and you become unmotivated. You move on to other projects and tasks and you probably procrastinate on this issue.

What would happen if you turned your frustration the other way? Instead of getting angry or shutting down, you use this situation to MOTIVATE yourself into action?

Turn your normal reactions to frustration into positive reactions.

Next time, take a look at the more successful people at work or in your life. See how they handle frustration. The ones who are moving up quickly and are happy are the ones who figure out how to bypass their frustration and get motivated to solve the problem. They never let people and things get them down.

Let’s go back to that pilot. If they got frustrated whenever their plane ventured off-course and god forbid, procrastinated on doing anything. What would happen?

Now put your career in that same situation. Is frustration, anger, or procrastination going to solve your problem and move you forward?

What techniques do you use to move you from frustration to motivation?

Many thanks to Zach Klein from Flickr for the image of Streeter Seidell.

During my coaching sessions, I run into a lot of "Fear of Failure" discussions. People who are paralyzed because they feel if they take action (any action), they will fail and the world will come crashing down upon them.

During my coaching sessions, I run into a lot of “Fear of Failure” discussions. People who are paralyzed because they feel if they take action (any action), they will fail and the world will come crashing down upon them.

I also experience “Fear of Success” with some of my clients. This one is even more insidious — it tends to show you the way to success and then the right side of your brain kicks in and you begin to worry about all the life changes (usually negative) which will impact your relationships, your routine, and your work. So you stop in your tracks.

But there is an even more sinister dysfunction out there — I call it “Fear of Completion”. And a lot of people have it.

I do. I think it stems from having a perfectionist streak in certain things you do and it causes the person to never reach completion on certain actions, projects, or services. You’re always afraid you can do it ‘just a little bit better’.

In addition, it plays nicely with Fear of Failure and Success — you don’t want to deliver it because you are afraid of failure (you have to fix it or do it again) or success (you have to then do more of it).

You see this happen when people are writing books, or developing a workshop, or rolling out technology. They keep adding areas or functionality to the deliverable so they never have to experience the reality of their actions.

They like to live in project limbo. I call it Maybe-Land. They’re not getting a ‘Yes this is great’ or a ‘No this sucks’ — they get no response, because they haven’t delivered it yet. Maybe-Land is a warm and fuzzy place to live. Most people out of work like to live in Maybe-Land — they don’t follow up on leads or interviews, because they might get a ‘No’. Or even scarier, a ‘Yes’.

How do you eliminate “Fear of Completion”? Two suggestions:

Set a firm deadline and let everyone know about it. You have to deliver it within 90 days. You are going on a diet and losing 50 pounds by this date. Publish it everywhere — tattoo it on your forehead.

Promote someone on your team or ask a colleague to physically take the presentation, the site, the project and launch it when they think it’s ready. You will never think it’s ready and continuously add functionality. They will stop the insanity and launch it (on-time).

Do you suffer from one of these fears? What do you do to ameliorate them?

“The first few months at a job, just shut up.” You will learn who to talk to and who the idiots are very quickly.

“If it takes 60 seconds or less to complete, don’t complain or postpone. Just do it now and get it over with.”

“Talent without work amounts to nothing”. For example: If you take one writing workshop and wrote every day a few hours a day, in 10 years, they’d all have a decent book published. Maybe not the Great American Novel, but a decent one.

“If you’re at work, take a hour and don’t work during lunch.” My old boss (who was very successful in business) took an hour everyday and made us stop working and go to lunch.

“When looking for a job, look at the company’s mission statement.” If you can’t figure out what they do in 3 sentences or less, walk away. They have their head up their butts.

“Most people who seem confident aren’t or started without confidence.” The trick to being self-confident is to fake it until you’re not faking it any more.

“If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” It’s not rude or out-of-line to ask.

A business class professor said on the first day of class: “Look around you and shake the person’s hand next you and get to know them and everyone in this class. Over the long run, that will be more valuable than anything I can teach you.”

“If you want something you’ve never had, you’re going to have to do something you’ve never done.”

“Mistakes are like stones in a backpack, carrying them with you can make you stronger, but theres a point at which you need to drop them to even move forward.”

You are not opening yourself up to the universe of opportunity. Okay, I might sound a bit 'out there', but it's true.

We all know the basic tenet of business is service. Whether it is a product, offering, communication, or something else, you need to connect with your clients and customers to deliver optimum service. That's a given.

And that phrase is: “How Can I Help You?” Stick with me here.

If you aren’t saying this phrase daily on the job, you are not:

Delivering excellent service.

Pushing yourself to new heights.

Connecting with as many people and growing your network.

Allowing yourself to be as successful as you can be.

You are not opening yourself up to the universe of opportunity. Okay, I might sound a bit ‘out there’, but it’s true.

We all know the basic tenet of business is service. Whether it is a product, offering, communication, or something else, you need to connect with your clients and customers to deliver optimum service. That’s a given.

But to grow from where you are now, you need to transcend the basics and open yourself up to new potentials. One way to do this is to ask: “How Can I Help You?”.

Now you might be saying, “Rich, you’re crazy.” or “I already know that.” I totally understand. But here’s my point — you need to embrace this phrase and say it to different people EVERY DAY. Don’t just hold it in your back pocket and let it out when it best suits you — you need to open yourself up to unforeseen unknowns — and reach out.

I‘ve used this phrase for years with almost everyone I meet (I do have to be slightly selective – some will take advantage of you). Where should you use it?

Ask your boss if they need any help on a tough project. Tell them you have a little time and can spend it helping them with the more mundane areas of a special project. They will LOVE you.

Ask everyone you network with how you can help them. It will knock them for a loop. Not only does it catch their attention, it immediately telegraphs that you are a serious professional that wants to get things done.

Ask each member of your team how you can help them. Tell them if they had to choose one area where you can help them, what would it be? Also tell them that they in turn need to begin asking this question too.

Extra credit: Ask your family how you can help them. This one will truly throw them for a loop. Be serious — you will not only make their day, you will deepen your relationship with each one. By the way, with your kids, you’re teaching them a valuable lesson.

I promise you — if you work this phrase into everything you do in business (and personal life), you will be infinitely more successful, happy, fulfilled, and rich than you ever would be if you didn’t say it.

Have you ever actively asked this question? What were the results?

Most people forget that to be successful, you have to get out of your office chair and meet people. To go to functions where you mingle with professionals. And be on time for appointments with those people.

That’s it. Show up.

This week, one of my clients told me a powerful story about a monthly gathering of executives that I introduced her to — this time she brought a friend along.

Her friend (we’ll call him John) works for a major consulting firm — a huge one. While at this event, John introduces himself to another attendee and proceeds to find out that this person is a major partner his firm.

This partner is impressed that John is out networking for the firm. They have a great conversation and the partner proceeds to ask him out to lunch.

What just happened to John’s career? It went through the roof and is currently in the stratosphere. Why? Because he showed up.

Over the next week or so, start looking for opportunities to get out and meet people. Spread your wings — start making friends and bringing home gobs of business cards.

You never know who you might meet. At the very least, it allows you to get out of that stale office and into the sunlight. You get to interact with people in various vocations — the ideas will start flowing — and then magic happens.

You’ll thank me.

Who have you met (at a function, meeting, etc.) that changed your life?

We humans are a wily bunch nervous animals. We sometimes let our thinking and facts guide us and other times we let our gut and emotions guide us.

At this time of the year, many of us look back at the preceding year and become very critical of our status, behaviors, actions, and results. We kneel and shake our fists to the sky and promise we will change for the better.

And then we start our regular journey — we stick to our new way of life for a little while — a few days, weeks, or months. And then something trips us up — an external influencer, a forgotten promise, or our old friend . . . procrastination. At that moment, all of our fortitude, our plans, and our dreams of change suddenly disappear in an instant. And we replace them with condemnation, past thinking, and surrender. We begin to hate ourselves and think we ‘lost our chance’ to change in 2011.

Let’s change that this year.

I teach this system to my clients every year and most of the time (even I’m not perfect) it works. Enjoy!

Make a clear decision on what you’re going to change in 2011. Be honest and focus on what really needs changing. Start cutting out pictures of the new you — your new career, your new body, your new situation.

Set parameters of your journey. Get a piece of paper and write down where you are and where you ultimately want to be. When you start a trip, you always have a starting point and a destination. You need to do the same thing — make a “AAA TripTik” for your journey.

Break up your trip into easily attainable segments. If you are losing weight, set to lose a small amount each week. If you are going after prospects, set your number at what you usually hit each day and then increase it slightly. If you are looking for a new position, begin by targeting and scheduling lunches with key contacts.

Build in buffers. This is important — and where most people trip up. Life comes at us quickly and we might forget or drop the ball. Or as I say, airplanes are off-course most of the time, the pilot continuously reorients them back on course. Schedule areas/times if we miss our target, we have the ability to jump right back on board.

Track, Track, Track. This is the final step – monitor and measure your progress. If you go below what you plan or even forget, don’t get frustrated and quit. Use one of your buffers and get right back on track. The secret is always moving forward — if you drop off, just begin again.

Congratulate yourself — you are taking the first step to change something in your life. Understand, there are going to be a lot of detractors out there trying to talk you out of your behavior, your actions, your beliefs. It always seems they pop up just at the right time when your are at your weakest and they prey on your insecurities to make fun of your plan or progress. Smile and stay on course.

Consistency is the key to your success. Like the ocean, there are soft waves and hard tsunamis, but the water still flows in and out. Keep going, stay true to your course and you will amaze yourself!
